Signs You've Got a Leak

Most leaks are invisible until the bill arrives or the plaster bubbles. Here's what to look for, and what it usually means.

Water bill has jumped

A leak you can't see is the most common cause. Check the meter with all taps off, if it's moving, call us.

Damp walls or ceilings

A pipe inside the wall or above the ceiling is weeping. We locate it precisely so we open only one small section.

Wet patch in the lawn

An underground supply or sewer line is leaking. Acoustic gear finds it without trenching the whole yard.

Low pressure at one tap

A leak or partial blockage on that branch. We trace the line and fix the cause, not the symptom.

Cracked tiles or lifting floors

Slab leaks push moisture up through the floor. Thermal imaging shows the hot or cold line before we cut anything.

Sound of running water

If you hear water when nothing's on, a pipe is leaking somewhere in the walls or under the slab. We'll find it.

How We Find It

Pinpoint Accuracy, Minimal Mess

Guessing means digging holes in the wrong place. We use detection equipment to find the leak first, then repair only what needs repairing.

Acoustic Detection

Sensitive ground and wall microphones pick up the sound of water escaping under pressure, even beneath concrete.

Thermal Imaging

Infrared cameras show the temperature trail of a leaking hot or cold pipe behind walls and under floors.

Pressure Testing

Isolating sections of pipework tells us exactly which line is losing water before we open anything.

Tracer Gas

For the hardest slab and underground leaks, a safe tracer gas escapes at the leak point and is picked up by a detector.

Think you've got a leak but not sure? Do the meter test, then call us.

Visible Leak or Hidden Leak?

Some leaks you can point at. Others need finding first. Here's how each one plays out.

  • Dripping tap, toilet cistern or shower head
  • Leaking flexi hose or connection under a sink
  • Weeping valve on a hot water system
  • Leaking outdoor tap or hose fitting

Hidden leak, detect first Located, then fixed

  • Meter spinning with everything off
  • Damp or bubbling paint with no obvious source
  • Wet lawn or subsiding paving
  • Unexplained drop in pressure or a high bill

Local Knowledge

Leak Detection Across Wollongong & the Illawarra

The give-away for most of our Balgownie and Corrimal customers is a Sydney Water bill that has doubled with no change in habits. The one-hour meter test, everything off and watch the dial, tells you in an hour whether the water is leaving the house somewhere. Slab homes in Unanderra and Oak Flats are the classic hidden-leak cases: warm patches on the tiles from a hot water line, or a soft spot in the lawn where the mains comes in.

Along the coast, salt air and old copper are a bad mix, and pinhole leaks behind bathroom walls are common in 1970s brick homes. Caught early it's a section repair; left for a year it's a ceiling. Weak pressure at one tap only can also be a leak on that branch rather than a pressure problem, which is why we test before we touch anything.

The same local crew finds it and fixes it, usually on the one visit.

Questions

Good to Know Before You Call

How do I check if I have a leak?

Turn off every tap and appliance, then look at your water meter. If the dial or numbers are still moving after a few minutes, water is escaping somewhere. Call us and we'll find it.

Do you have to dig up the yard or cut open the wall?

Rarely more than a small access point. Detection equipment locates the leak to within centimetres, so we open only where the repair is needed.

Can you fix the leak on the same visit?

In most cases, yes. Once located, the repair is usually straightforward and our vans carry the fittings. Slab leaks sometimes need a second visit for concrete reinstatement.

Will my insurance cover it?

Many home policies cover damage from hidden leaks, and some cover the detection. We provide a written report and photos to support your claim.

What about leaks in the hot water system?

A weeping valve is a quick fix. Water from the tank body means the cylinder has failed, see our hot water page for repair vs replace advice.

Is the water authority responsible for my leak?

Leaks on your side of the meter are the owner's responsibility. If we find the leak is on the authority's side, we'll tell you and point you to the right people.

How do I do the water meter test myself?

Turn off every tap and appliance, read the meter including the red digits, wait an hour without using water, and read it again. If the numbers have moved, water is leaving the property somewhere. Sydney Water's meter guide shows how to read yours. Tell us the result when you call and we'll come with the right gear.
